Work Breathe

Breathe was technically complex, with over 70 lighting and sound cues packed into a one-hour fringe adaptation. Working from George Emberson's original technical design, including his QLab programming and editing of Sallie Mills Lewis's sound design, I repurposed the sound to suit the Mercury Theatre's Studio and the shorter running time.

The different demands of the production and venue meant redesigning the lighting entirely for the new space. Programming and pre-visualising on ETC Eos let me work closely with the director, Wendy Smith, to make sure the design matched her vision for the production.

The play balances Sam's struggle to live with OCD against her growing wish to start a family with her husband. The lighting had to shift quickly between surreal moments, where actors personifying her OCD attack her, and the calmer scenes of her work as a content creator.

It was especially exciting to work on a play written by Jazz Ely, who I had worked with on Festen, and a phenomenal opportunity to help realise the writer's own experience on stage.
